A Little More Color

Scott delights in all aspects of the built environment. He is an enthusiastic real estate professional, published architectural historian, and trained architectural designer who brings a deep-rooted love of residential design, construction, and sales to Astor & Longwood.

Scott started life in the suburbs of Los Angeles before moving to Louisville as a teenager. After earning his professional degree in architecture, he embarked on a design career in Houston before returning to Louisville, where he joined his father and brother in commercial real estate.  Scott subsequently relocated to Chicago to participate in the city’s booming residential design/renovate/resell market and entered residential brokerage.  Success in sales led Scott to management, where he served as managing broker for the sales offices of three major firms, including Coldwell Banker and Baird & Warner, in downtown Chicago, Evanston, and Winnetka.

Scott’s experience in residential real estate extends beyond brokerage to design and construction. He has planned and renovated single family houses and urban condominium and cooperative apartments in Texas, Kentucky, Michigan, Florida, and South Carolina, navigating the zoning, board review, and permitting processes. He is additionally well versed in the intricacies of multi-family ownership regimes, having served on multiple condominium and cooperative boards.

In 2012 Scott took a sabbatical from work to pursue a life-long dream of a PhD in architectural history. Six years later, Dr. Gill could be found teaching the History of World Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, and, along with partner Bill Stegeman, founding Astor & Longwood. Scott’s and Bill’s complementary backgrounds bring a special depth to A&L and the service they provide their clients. While both partners share a deep understanding of the real estate business and have finely honed skills in management and negotiation, Scott adds a keen appreciation of architectural history and a focus on market research to Bill’s exceptional relationship and sales capabilities.

Scott has co-authored three books on Kentucky architecture—Kentucky Houses of Stratton Hammon; Country Houses of Louisville, 1899-1939; and Gideon Shryock: His Life and Architecture, 1802-1880—all of which, ahem, are available on Amazon.com! He is an active member of the Texas Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, a member and past director of the Society of Architectural Historians, and an Associate Member of the AIA.  Scott also serves as a director of a private foundation dedicated to supporting education and medical research. In addition to a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, Scott earned an MBA from MIT, a Master of Architecture from Rice University, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Stanford.

Scott enjoys travel with partner Bill, and especially going places where they can hike and explore. A favorite adventure is to get in the car, point in a direction…and go, be it to the great outdoors or to an immersion in the fascinating architecture of ancient cities. He is pretty good at Italian, reasonably OK with Spanish, and can distress Parisians with his French.
